ARGALASTI AND THE AEGEAN COAST
Visit Argalasti, a large village in the hills of South Pelion, on market day (Saturday). It is a typical village market, small, with produce sold direct from the back of vans, and the opportunity to bargain with the local traders. The local shops offer pottery and assorted tourist wares. Its village square in the shade of the plane trees offers a quiet, traditional corner to take in the "real" Pelion village life. A meal at one of the tavernas or bars gives you a taste of local food at local prices. The church of Agio Apostolis with its tall marble belfry is worth admiring. There is a cash point just below Argalasti platia.
Follow the road along the hilltops through open rolling countryside to Xinovrisi, then on through a narrow gorge to Potistika beach and the Aegean Sea. There are two tavernas to relax in and have a bite of lunch.
After Potistika, follow the coastline south to Paltsi and the tiny beach and village of Mortias, then on to Katagiorgis. This tiny village has a lovely beach, and a couple of tavernas and beach bars to choose from. Katagiorgis. is only a ten minute water taxi ride from Skiathos. Ask in the bar at the far end of the beach if you want to take the journey over, but remember to take their phone number if you want to get back!
