THE MOUNTAIN AND FISHING VILLAGES OF THE PAGASITIC GULF
Visit Milies, high in the mountains at 500 meters. There is a beautiful 18th century church lined with frescos and iconostases, with a mural of the zodiac in its entrance.Visit the craft museum, and pick up some local organic produce made by the women of Milies.

Milies has a fantastic open carriage narrow gauge steam train that runs through the steep narrow valleys to the coast at Ano Lechonia. It is well worth spending a day taking a return journey. It is possible to walk the line. There is a footpath along the entire route.

The train runs on Saturdays and Sundays, leaving Ano Lechonia at 11am. The journey takes 90 minutes, arriving at Milies at 12.30. The train is revolved by hand on a train turntable, ready for its descent at 4pm. There are tavernas by the station, otherwise follow the monopati (cobbled footpath) up to Milies platia for lunch and a browse through the village.
Steam train timetable
Tickets cost approximatly €13 per person for the return trip. Tickets can be purchased in advance from the Volos train station or Volos tourist office. One carriage is reserved for buying tickets on the day. If you want to purchase a ticket at Ano lechonia on the day, arrive early to avoid disappointment. The train is not always pulled by a steam engine, but the diesel engine looks the same, and the day out is still great fun!

Explore neighbouring Vyzitsa, a small "balcony" village with its traditional stone mansions clinging to the side of the mountains, and with outstanding panoramic views of the Pagasitic Gulf.
A Greek donkey A small road leads you down from Milies through a narrow tree lined gorge to the Pagasitic coast, where you come to Affisos, a tourist village at the foot of the mountains. There is a very good restaurant in Afissos, or a selection of local tavernas and bars.

Follow the coast south, through the tiny fishing hamlets of Lefokastro, Prinos, Koutsorodeika and Kalamos, all with beaches and a taverna or bar.
